Pocket LCD games put one game in a case the size of a pocket calculator, using the same kind of liquid-crystal screen. They were cheap to make and ran for months on button cells, because a liquid-crystal display uses almost no power.

The screen cannot draw. Every picture it will ever show is a fixed shape, made in advance, each one a segment that is either dark or clear. A falling object is a row of separate shapes lit one after another, which is why everything moves in jumps. Tilt a real one to the light and you can see the faint outlines of them all.

Behind the liquid crystal sat a printed picture, the scenery that never changed, so the game looked richer than its few dozen segments. GAME A was the gentle version, GAME B the fast one, and when you stopped playing it went back to being a clock.
