A video recorder put television on tape. Record tonight's film, watch it at the weekend; buy a blank tape and keep a programme for ever. Through the 1980s it spread from a luxury to something most homes had, usually sitting under the television.

The tape moves slowly past a drum of spinning heads set at an angle, so each head writes a long slanted stripe across the tape. That trick packs a moving picture into a slow tape. When a tape from another machine didn't quite line up, bands of noise crept across the picture, and the tracking control nudged them away.

Its clock was famous for the wrong reason. A power cut reset it to 12:00, and setting it meant a sequence of buttons nobody remembered, so in many homes the display blinked 12:00 for years.

Timer recording was worse: day, start time, stop time, channel, and one mistake taped the wrong programme. Later, TV listings printed short number codes that did the whole job in one go.
